deep lock quarry

today was a beautiful day, temps in the seventies in november. i had to get out and go for a walk, with cold rainy weather coming this weekend, this may be the last hike for awhile. i decided to hike the deep lock quarry trail, but as it is less than two miles i wanted to add a little distance onto the hike. so i parked at hunt farm and hiked up the towpath.

deep lock quarry contains the remains of the valley’s quarry, canal and railroad operations. the remains of the berea quarry and several millstones are scattered throughout this section of the forest. the trail is in fact the old railroad line that lead in and out of the quarry. the quarry was once owned partly owned by quaker oats, and it’s millstones used to grind the oats for quaker oatmeal.

stones cut from this quarry also provided building blocks for canal locks.

the weather was perfect but fall is almost at an end. the spectacular colors from just this past weekend have all fallen away, everything is brown, and the leaves still clinging on the tree have lost their color. as quickly as fall moved in it has departed and soon everything will be covered in white. i look forward to the big fluffy fake looking snow, my favorite kind, but i can still hear that niggling voice in the back of my head. sticks and snow, sticks and snow.

miss you lori.
